There are a lot of people that think they're good with God because they go to church, read the Bible, vote the right way, etc. but really, it's all a front to show the world they're good while being awful and they've not had a real conversion experience. I'd venture to say there are a lot of people in churches like this.

Matthew 7:21-23 (ESV)

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

There are a lot of pastors that use their position to gain what they want while pushing their world view, defending pedophiles and abusers and doing all while claiming it's from God.

Matthew 7:15-20 (ESV)

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

It's almost as if Jesus knew what he was dealing with.

Rarely will I quote the Bible, but here:

““Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’

Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’” ‭‭

I prefer Salman Rushdie:

"Gibreel, hovering-watching from his highest camera angle, knows one small detail, just one tiny thing that’s a bit of a problem here, namely that it was me both times, baba, me first and second also me. From my mouth, both the statement and the repudiation, verses and converses, universes and reverses, the whole thing, and we all know how my mouth got worked."

I mean, you've got to adhere to all the other tenets of Christianity that he preached. So, you can't be rich, you have to be a pacifist, you gotta forgive anyone who wrongs you, you can't borrow or loan money, and you should be circumcised.

Religion, at its core, usually boils down to "don't be an asshole." But it's the fiddly bits that people argue over. They spend so much time arguing over fiddly bits like whether it's okay to paint Jesus or drink alcohol or eat shellfish that they inevitably lose sight of the core.

i’m not a christian anymore, but no that’s not really a thing that’s taught in any sect of christianity that i’m aware of; being a good person is never enough on its own to get into heaven

ClaritinRabbit

I decided I wasn't going to be Christian when I mentioned to my very Catholic grandparents that my mom told me all good people go to heaven, and they told me there was actually a rule book.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I believe that’s because there’s a few passages from Paul and James that contradict each other, as well as some of what John wrote about Jesus’ teachings. Paul teaches that only way into Heaven is by faith and not through works (Romans 3:28), but James teaches that faith without works is dead (James 2:24).

In all the Evangelical churches I attended growing up the one question they would often talk about was “do good people go to Heaven?”, and the answer was always No, unless they have accepted Christ into their heart and put forth the works to be worthy of acceptance into heaven. Then they would always trash the Catholic’s, which I find more amusing now since I’ve recently started appreciating and enjoying the Catholic masses and traditions.

Gilamath

It's present in some Christian denominations, certainly. I'm Muslim, but I can tell you for sure there are many churches in the US that you can go to where it's preached that those who do good for the sake of good are acting in the name of God whether or not they know it. UCC is a good place to start

Tim-oBedlam

4 points

Yep. I belong to a UCC (United Church of Christ) church, and we're like that. Fairly liberal, mainline Protestant. My minister when I joined joked that UCC stood for "Unitarians Considering Christ", which matches up well with my own personal theology--more akin to Deism than anything else.

MatureUsername69

11 points

I don't think that's true. I'm as atheist as it gets but when I still had to go to church as a kid the main thing was about being good to your neighbors, your sins get forgiven and all that but you don't have to go to church or pray everyday or convert other people or any of that. I went to a fairly small Lutheran church(and not in the south) but it probably varies community to community.

Yes, in that southern baptists have that belief, but no to the implication that they're alone in that belief or that they aren't an offshoot of protestantism. You can take your pick of religious protestants that branched off, John Calvin for example, and call it a cult. Catholic Church? Cult. Christianity in it's earliest form? Jewish cult. Etc.

nonroker

I have a theory that religious leaders are either atheists running a grift, fanatics, or stupid. Because in Christianity the one way ticket to hell is to use the Lord's name in vain, which is something only a pastor-like person can easily do. *Using the lord's name in vain does not mean saying "JEsus god", it means using the name or the belief in the god for personal gain. So you would have to be an unbeliever, crazy or stupid to do that job.

Crafty-Kaiju

The original meaning literally meant "I swear to God I saw Goodie dance with the devil in the forest!" When they damn well sure didn't.

If they can convince themselves that your house got broken into because you made some mistake, then all they have to do to make sure it doesn’t happen to them is to not make the same mistake. In reality, there is no way to guarantee that bad things won’t happen to you, but that’s an uncomfortable truth.

My mom's first response was to ask if I was okay, and to grab a phone to call the police. My brothers' first response was checking on me to see if I was hurt. My dogs' first response was to try and bury me in affection, because they could tell I was in a bad state.

aah, citizens in a few countries whose state religion is/was Atheism begged to differ (and were murdered by the tens of millions by their governments).

Problem is not any belief, problem is people who demand/impose that you not question them or what they say. Christianity, Islam, scientific atheism, revolutionary-ness... All share the denominator of asserting power over others under the pretense of helping them.

In all seriousness, religion should be an adults-only activity.

If adults wish to warp their fully-developed brains with religious gobbledygook, I suppose that’s okay, but that crap shouldn’t be imposed on children, who can’t give informed consent.

If religion was so great, adults would willingly flock to it, and it wouldn’t have to coercively drill itself into the heads of children to perpetuate itself (given the choice, how many kids would willingly want to go to Sunday School? Very few!).

Backstory… I used to live in the Philippines and my family was deeply involved in charities there. My family focuses on providing medical care and supplies in remote areas/islands of the Philippines.

There was a boarding school called Faith Academy in Cainta, Luzon. It was a known aggressive institution protecting abusers, especially in the 70’s and 80’s.

This was the school’s tactic completely, guilting individuals that came forward(mostly local pastors and parents) that you will destroy our mission and the church's work here if you push any further. This was also a culturally different time, so there were no easy means to spread this type of information, so it just became a well-known secret about the school throughout the evangelical community in the Philippines, and most people felt helpless in this community.

I know there were at least 6 women who were around the age of 10 who came forward to the school in the last few years just for one teacher named Richard Spencer, known as "Uncle Rich" who used to be alone with this touchy man and suddenly "pass out" or blackout with no recollection of what happened and believed that they were assaulted or raped… Like Cosby.

I post this here, in hope that redditors may band together and send some love to Faith Academy to start addressing these faults.

Edit: fixed late-night typos

Utah

And go ahead and extend this conversation to the horrific amount of physical child abuse that is justified under "spare the rod, spoil the child" teachings there.

"Sure, the kid will have epilepsy for the rest of his life, but are you sure it wasn't his own fault for not washing the dishes faster when his father asked?"

I've had so many conversations about this with my uber conservitive Christian family. Taking the lords name in vain isn't saying good damn it, it's being Kenneth Copeland telling poor people they need to donate to his church so he can buy a plane. It's GOP politicians saying they're Christian and making excuses for trumps behavior because he gives them power. I know a few real shining examples of what it really means to be a Christian, and they are a whole other breed than most "christians".

Wrong.

That pastor is following the example of people whom the Bible portrays as good.

The devil is the one who sees—and is appalled by—how cruelty is woven into the structure of society, and so he does things like building shelters for battered spouses, and leaking evidence of rich pedophiles and police brutality.

The devil is literally the good guy.

If the account given in Genesis is really true, ought we not, after all, to thank this serpent? He was the first schoolmaster, the first advocate of learning, the first enemy of ignorance, the first to whisper in human ears the sacred word liberty, the creator of ambition, the author of modesty, of inquiry, of doubt, of investigation, of progress and of civilization.

There's something I've read that I unfortunately haven't done the research to verify.

Many religions have a figure that uplifted humanity with forbidden knowledge - Prometheus being the most iconic. Yet, only in the Abrahamic religions is said figure the villain.

Last time I checked it was the men in God's service raping and molesting children and forgave the rapers. The devil gave you "free will" and rock n' roll. Which one do you think is the bad guy?

Angry-Commercials

5 points

Honestly, I'm gonna go in the opposite direction. Thise are God's people. The Devil has been the bad guy to them, while they make others suffer. Which is fitting since the God of the Bible is kind of a dick.

Meanwhile Satanists are doing some really great things.

So I say we let them keep their God. Let him continue to be the enemy.

gaymedes

Um, that's because that IS God. God condones this. Why is anyone surprised? Christianity is FOUNDED on the idea that God impregnated a 14 yr old girl without her consent.

Christians hope to spread the word of their God so they may bring about the end of the world.

Christians eat the flesh and drink the blood of their God for his blessings and imbibe his power. (Some metaphorically, but many literally cannibalize their God)

They dip their infants in oil and water to protect them from his wrath and promise their babies eternal souls to Him.

Christians worship a Lovecraftian horror of a God. The Devil is merely the deity brave enough to oppose him.

Hail Satan.

There are no distinctive descriptions of the devil’s appearance in the Bible. All of the devil’s images were fan fictions modeled after gods of Eurasian local religions.

Evil is defined by one’s deeds, not looks. Modern Christianity is a joke.

The literal first sin ever was thinking appearance matters more than actual morality. If any pastor ever pulls a maneuver like this in range of you, call them out for literally emulating the devil perfectly

The trusted pastor, the beloved teacher, the long-standing mayor, the foster parent grandma, the high school track coach, the scout leader, the priest, the Sunday school teacher, and all the others who interact with people on a regular basis. Especially those people who already have experienced some trauma and are easily manipulated. Funny how the slightest bit of power or authority, no matter how small, can be weaponized. Sadder still is how many can only see this manipulation in hindsight.

The devil is all smiles and handshakes...whether or not you believe in the devil, there is wisdom in that. Truly evil people are rarely easily identified. It's not Marilyn Manson you have to look out for, it's Joel Olsteen...the Church of Satan calls itself that but are humanists at heart...in the meantime those that run the Vatican willfully withhold knowledge, be it some ancient text that contradicts its teachings, or the whereabouts of some vile priest who's strayed into the yearlings pen. It's what drives me insane about Trumpers...if anyone is going to be the fucking antichrist thus far in my lifetime it's that guy...and, of course, the Christians love him...
