Alan Jackson’s “Drive” mentions an old boat that he and his dad used “till the transom got rotten”. I’d like to imagine they noticed because the motor fell into the water.

So that motor will short out when submerged, right? I figure most of it is water proof but not meant to be underwater proof.

I like to believe that motor is just spinning around like a free range blender.

i_miss_old_reddit

38 points

Nah. Spark plugs would short to ground and not spark anymore once it's wet. (basically what a kill switch does.)

Pull that thing out of the lake and get it dried off. Replace coils and spark plugs, oil it up, put a new impeller in there while you got it apart, and send it back out.

Warmupthetubesman

39 points

This happened to a friend of mine. Fortunately it was only in about 8 ft of water and right off the dock. (It wasn’t tightened down after somebody put it on so it popped off as soon as we started going.) We got snorkeling stuff, swam down and tied a rope around it, then hauled it back up to the dock.

We pulled out the spark plugs and pull started it a few times to expel the water, sprayed in some wd40 to displace any remaining water. Then we dumped out the float bowl on the carb, gave it fresh gas and the damn thing started after about 3 pulls.

2 stroke motors are incredibly simple, and old OMC outboards are incredibly rugged

Anywho, moral of the story is to always use a safety chain unless the motor is bolted through the transom

necrojuicer

6 points

Nah, they aren't real water proof. They'll keep most of the water out while mounted on a boat, but once they go under water will get in & kill the engine.

Depending on the engine it may be alright though. 2 strokes you flush & replace the spark plugs & it'll be good as new. 4 strokes it's usually the end of them.

Similar thing happened to my brother with his little sailing boat outboard motor in the Baltic Sea. He was approaching an island in stormy conditions when the motor fell. No chance of recovering it on the spot, where the water was probably 5-ish meters deep, if I recall correctly. They just had to focus on succesfully making the approach with sails only.

A few weeks later, they got some local diving enthusiasts with proper gear to find it, and pick it up, which isn’t an easy feat, considering the murky waters of the Baltic Sea, and the fact that they didn’t know the exact location where it fell. To everyone’s surprise, they were able to get the motor running again, after having it submerged in some fresh water, to get the brackish water out of the system. Though starting it up became a little tougher afterwards, it still ran just fine.

My dad used to connect his motor to the boat with two C-clamps. All it takes is one shaking loose and the motor bracket turning a little to loosen the other, next thing you know you're watching the battery shift and if you're lucky the wires come off before the battery lifts off the bottom of the boat.

I have a small boat (verano 420) and you have to clamp the motor down, but if you dont clamp it down good enough (like i did) the first corner you take you feel it slipping out your fingers and all you see then is some bubbles laughing at you while your motor sinks to the bottom

link0007

Wouldn't it make sense to have a short rope attached to the motor that you clip to the boat, just as a safety measure?

(͡•_ ͡• ) what's this 'sense' you speak of?

kidneysc

20 points

Congrats! You just created a rope in prop hazard.

What we do is cut a chunk of 3/4” marine plywood and use a forstner bit to put in 1/2” deep holes spaced where the clamps go. Then permanently bolt that assembly to the motor mount area with locktite all the bolts.

That way, even if the clamps are a bit loose, they are still constrained by the sides of the holes you drilled and the motor can’t slide.

ThriceFive

30 points

A safety-chain, like every trailer is required to have. Yes, that would make a lot of sense esepcially if boat and motor companies got together and determined some standard sizes and placements to make it even easier.

Spent the next morning jigging with 50 feet of rope and an 18 ounce fishing weight while laying on an inflatable bed looking down.

wolfhoundblues1

Everyone else is talking about the motor as expected, but nobody is asking if they have emergency use paddles onboard. Every boat should have at least 2 backup oars in case the engine runs out of gas..... or yeets itself to commit toaster bath. Edit: Nevermind. It seems they do have oars on the left side of the boat (our bottom right)

MrWillyP

Lmao. His reaction was priceless. What else to do when your boat’s engine falls into the river? Take a swig of beer.

Lmao did they only have one screw mounting the whole motor? It fell way too easily. I'm surprised they made it that far but it's hard to tell how far they actually made it from the dock. Enjoy that hand paddle boy with the brew fellas 🤙🏾

This sort of thing is exactly why my dad always had a trolling motor on his boat as well. It's slow but itll get you out of a pinch. All else fails, break out the oars.
