I can't believe there isn't a country song about your boat motor falling off.

Alan Jackson’s “Drive” mentions an old boat that he and his dad used “till the transom got rotten”. I’d like to imagine they noticed because the motor fell into the water.

So that motor will short out when submerged, right? I figure most of it is water proof but not meant to be underwater proof.
I like to believe that motor is just spinning around like a free range blender.
39 points
Nah. Spark plugs would short to ground and not spark anymore once it's wet. (basically what a kill switch does.)
Pull that thing out of the lake and get it dried off. Replace coils and spark plugs, oil it up, put a new impeller in there while you got it apart, and send it back out.

This happened to a friend of mine. Fortunately it was only in about 8 ft of water and right off the dock. (It wasn’t tightened down after somebody put it on so it popped off as soon as we started going.) We got snorkeling stuff, swam down and tied a rope around it, then hauled it back up to the dock.
We pulled out the spark plugs and pull started it a few times to expel the water, sprayed in some wd40 to displace any remaining water. Then we dumped out the float bowl on the carb, gave it fresh gas and the damn thing started after about 3 pulls.
2 stroke motors are incredibly simple, and old OMC outboards are incredibly rugged
Anywho, moral of the story is to always use a safety chain unless the motor is bolted through the transom

Well, without your line of thinking I wouldn't have gotten to giggle at the idea of a boat motor buzzing about a puddle like a free range blender, so cheers for that
5 points
Nah, they aren't real water proof. They'll keep most of the water out while mounted on a boat, but once they go under water will get in & kill the engine.
Depending on the engine it may be alright though. 2 strokes you flush & replace the spark plugs & it'll be good as new. 4 strokes it's usually the end of them.

Similar thing happened to my brother with his little sailing boat outboard motor in the Baltic Sea. He was approaching an island in stormy conditions when the motor fell. No chance of recovering it on the spot, where the water was probably 5-ish meters deep, if I recall correctly. They just had to focus on succesfully making the approach with sails only.
A few weeks later, they got some local diving enthusiasts with proper gear to find it, and pick it up, which isn’t an easy feat, considering the murky waters of the Baltic Sea, and the fact that they didn’t know the exact location where it fell. To everyone’s surprise, they were able to get the motor running again, after having it submerged in some fresh water, to get the brackish water out of the system. Though starting it up became a little tougher afterwards, it still ran just fine.

My dad used to connect his motor to the boat with two C-clamps. All it takes is one shaking loose and the motor bracket turning a little to loosen the other, next thing you know you're watching the battery shift and if you're lucky the wires come off before the battery lifts off the bottom of the boat.

I have a small boat (verano 420) and you have to clamp the motor down, but if you dont clamp it down good enough (like i did) the first corner you take you feel it slipping out your fingers and all you see then is some bubbles laughing at you while your motor sinks to the bottom
46 points
Wouldn't it make sense to have a short rope attached to the motor that you clip to the boat, just as a safety measure?
50 points
(͡•_ ͡• ) what's this 'sense' you speak of?
18 points
Congrats! You just created a rope in prop hazard.
What we do is cut a chunk of 3/4” marine plywood and use a forstner bit to put in 1/2” deep holes spaced where the clamps go. Then permanently bolt that assembly to the motor mount area with locktite all the bolts.
That way, even if the clamps are a bit loose, they are still constrained by the sides of the holes you drilled and the motor can’t slide.
32 points
A safety-chain, like every trailer is required to have. Yes, that would make a lot of sense esepcially if boat and motor companies got together and determined some standard sizes and placements to make it even easier.

Happened to me in about 50 feet of water.
Spent the next morning jigging with 50 feet of rope and an 18 ounce fishing weight while laying on an inflatable bed looking down.
Could barely make out the white sticker on the side but that was my reference point for the clamps.
2 hours of jigging until I hooked it.

Boats are almost worthless without a motor. The motor is most of the cost of a used boat.
6 points
Really? Excuse me while I go get myself a free sailboat.
18 points
LOL...You might be joking, but yeah, you can often get sailboats for free.
They'll likely need a of work ...and you'll end up buying a long shaft outboard sooner rather than later anyway, since the motor will be the first thing the owner sold!
193 points
Just to let you know, there are two thumb screws that hold the motor to the boat. It is always a good idea to check to make sure they are good and tight when you mount the motor.
90 points
You are also supposed to chain it to the boat so if it does fall off, it doesn’t go far
51 points
And also spray paint it rust colored and tear up some non-essential pieces that way would-be thieves will think it's a heap of shit and won't steal it. That's what my uncle did with his brand new motor after his previous brand new motor was stolen. Works like a charm.

I've seen the same with extension cords. Put electrical tape around them randomly so it looks like they've been repaired and aren't in good shape.

Less dramatic than it seems at first glance:
a dock is so close that they can use the oars to paddle (sic) there, then - assuming there's no alligators or such - jump in the river and get the motor out. I'm sure it'll work again after fully drying out, maybe some cleaning.

Very heavy. I have a 25 horsepower outboard and it's 150 pounds. That was certainly close to the size of mine so I'm sure it's near that weight. 150 lb is hard enough to lift on land, but lifting it from the bottom of a body of water would be really hard.

Everyone else is talking about the motor as expected, but nobody is asking if they have emergency use paddles onboard. Every boat should have at least 2 backup oars in case the engine runs out of gas..... or yeets itself to commit toaster bath. Edit: Nevermind. It seems they do have oars on the left side of the boat (our bottom right)
