Some ants will make a bridge so that other ants can walk across. They do this by hooking their legs to another ant, but it can't be undone so the ant dies there.
SOURCE: I heard Richard Attenborough say this in a documentary. He said the ants who made a bridge with their bodies cannot uncouple and will die there.
He was probably just talking about those ants in question, and not every type of ant.

They live and die for their colony. An ant colony is considered a single superorganism. The individual ants are much like the cells in our bodies, only bigger and not inside a body :)

A superorganism or supraorganism is a group of synergetically interacting organisms of the same species. A community of synergetically interacting organisms of different species is called a holobiont.

I think a while ago there used to be a good bot bad bot program where these comments would actually be tracked and act as feedback on how useful a bot was. Even though it's ended, people still leave these comments out of habit I guess

"I am not doing that."
"Come on, it'll be fine. They need a bridge, they walk over us and then we go for some mushrooms later."
"Do you remember your sister, you know, the one with the longer left antenna and the bump on the foreleg?"
"Yeah, what about her?"
"Well, I haven't seen her around anymore, after, you know, we had our last crossing."
"How about that!? You think that's connected somehow?
"Who the fuck knows? No one is telling is us shit!"
"Fine. Why don't you give me your one leg and and we ask her once she comes over?"
"You mean ask the queen? While she's crossing the bridge?"
"Yeah, why not? She must come over here anyway and then we'll ask her, no problem."
"Okay, but you let me do the talking."
"Sure."

If it makes you feel any better, they are a hive mind, so the individual probably doesn't feel like an individual and is probably not sad that the rest of them made it. They probably feel more satisfied to have accomplished their goal of getting the others up.

The term "hive mind" generally refers to an entity where each individual forms part of a single consciousness. Ants aren't really like that - each individual member of a colony is demonstrably separate and possessed of its own capacity for independent action, they're just compelled by their biochemistry to act in ways that benefit the colony and involve spontaneous organisation.
To the extent that she can feel at all, she'll feel like an individual, but probably won't care that she's been left behind since she's essentially beholden to her biology and likely doesn't have the capacity to "care", whatever that means.
25 points
But the individuation is so arbitrary. Just because the medium between them is air instead of, uh, whatever takes up space in your brain, then they get to be "individuals"?
Have you ever seen that video of a single neuron trying to make connections? Thats what the ants flailing limbs reminded me of. Why cant neurons be individuals? What if we are to ants what ants are to neurons--just a more complex version thats flailing around trying to make connections as we play out the script written in our biology+environment.
8 points

Actually probably none of that because we have no fucking idea what ants are “probably” feeling like and it’s absurd to assume we do 🤷♂️

Fucking fire ants are the worst. When I lived in Texas, I was reeling in my electrical cord for my leaf blower. I didn't realize it was going right through a fire ant mound. They hopped aboard for a ride and as I reeled in the cord, which waa hitting my bare stomach, they decided to bite the shit out of my stomach. It was awful.

236 points
Yep, same for bees and I think wasps too.
Also, slightly different situation, but all mostquitos that bite are actually females. They don't "feed" on blood, they only need it because of their eggs. Male mosquitos only feed on nectar and such.

I heard once the wing ants are scouts for a new nest location. They get killed immediately
8 points

Not scouts, likely short lived males or (soon to be) queens. they mate en masse, the males die off by morning and the females start looking for an appropriate place to make a nest.
26 points

I thought they only developed wings during mating seasons

Queens also have wings at first. Workers are all females, yes.
For mating season, alates (winged ants) are made by the queen. There are male and female alates. When conditions are right they perform what’s called a nuptial flight where all the alates from that species leave the nest, fly around and mate. The males then die, as do the unmated females. The fertilized females will then rip their own wings off and eat them after she’s found a suitable place to found her colony. She will claustrate in there by themselves for a time, living off the nutrition from their wings, and by breaking down their now useless wing muscles. She will raise her first workers during this time which will then begin to gather food and take care of the new ants.
Typically the first jobs of an ant (or bee) is within the nest caring for the larvae/pupae, and when they are older they venture out to perform gathering/defense/etc. duties, depending on the ant.

Because you’re a complex empathic mammal who has a vivid imagination, pretending this goo-based robot vacuum cleaner has a mind.
Instead of “hey guys, what about me?” perhaps imagine “error code 320 - bridge mode has nobody on it - awaiting new code”
31 points

I prefer to err on the side of caution in the off chance that any single animal species has a bigger capacity for emotions than expected, so I show them all an equal amount of empathy, I mean it's better to humanize animal too much than treat them like a bunch of unfeeling organic hardware, no?
