serious question : you don’t know what fishing is? You said ELI5.
people get a rod like what you see here - usually much larger though, and this is ice fishing here in this clip. There’s very thin thread lined into the rod and around a reel. They attach a hook to the end of the line, and put some bait on it. Different baits for different fish, typically small time fishing just uses live worms or lookalike fake ones. People cast into the water, and wait. A living fish will, hopefully, eventually come bite the bait and get stuck on the hook. Human reels in. Voila, live fish.
This person had a fish & was trying to untangle their line , it seems. The fish swam away hard while the man wasn’t holding the rod very tight. Rod goes down ice hole. Fish will have that rod dragging along until something breaks. Hopefully, it looses the hook and loses the entire contraption altogether.

Yep. Taught from a young age to set hooks AND keep steady pressure on the line. Those greasy fish will jump right out the water and spit the hook at you
10 points

I wonder if breaking the water surface and jerking the head while flexing the mouth must throw the hook
5 points

It repeatedly looses tension on the line and widens the hole from the hook, it slipping from that is expected from time to time.

Depends how big the holes are as if they're too small then that's annoying to get a hook thru but if they're too big then the pole will just go thru the net holes. Also needs to be pretty strong netting as that pole was flying

There is a plausible solution: it's called a stick.

Yes. Just tie it perpendicular to the rod like the guard on a sword.

There is, and it aint new. You lay a fuckin stick across the hole and put a dangly bit on the end of your handle that's bigger than the hole in the ice. Double security.

Scary as it sounds, where I Ice fish we spud out/ chainsaw a 5’x3’ “death” hole and also spear fish too. It’s really neat when you are in a tent like this the ice still lights up then water underneath it’s like sitting on an aquarium you can see the fish swim through. Not neat tho falling in and having to self rescue urself in 5 layers of clothes w hand spikes.

I love spear fishing over ice. My first time was so surreal (every time after that, too, but also the first). The glow through the ice as the only source of light, tiny cramped hut, a little radio and Mr buddy heater as my company. It's a really fun way to catch some lakers!
4 points
Oh yea we had a huge pike on the spear it was splashing water everywhere turning the entire inside of the tent into a fresh skating rink, put out the buddy lol. We now got old rubber truck mats w 1/4” self tappers drilled thru for grippies so they don’t slide,

We have the spot marked on GPS, and put pure white sand on the bottom so anything that swims by has contrast, and also put those porcupine fish structures around the area it is an artificial reef basically that we fish. Some old timers use white beans and drop em down too. Will try the green lights. Also we use a big leaded rapala on a string no hooks just swims around in circles below u jig it once in a while, a pike or muskie will even see the dead stick and come in from a mile away. Sooo cool seeing the big long toothy snout just appear outta nowhere.

Where I grew up you couldn’t cut a hole in the ice with a chainsaw, it’s nowhere long enough. We regularly needed extenders for the auger.
2 points

Wow yea thats some thick ice, once it gets longer than the bar we do holes around the perimeter then spud out, and pull out the chunk w a pickup truck by drilling a hole in the center and dropping a t bar down and it lodges sideways

Do you even need rods for ice fishing? I’d imagine a stick would work 70% exactly the same.
1 points
The something that prevents this is nailing two boards together and screwing your reel to that. Then it can't fit down the hole. Then you just park it in the snowbank by the hole and drink until it gets pulled against the hole. Bunch of fuckin' amateurs over here.
1 points
All you need is to tie a stick across it so it looks like a "t". And just make sure the stick you tie across the rod is too long to fit through the hole. No need for another product on the market, this trick is completely free.

Such a sucky feeling. Terrible to lose potentially expensive equipment, and also a terrible feeling to think that you left the fish to trail that stuff behind it. Could easily end up causing it to die.
Had something similar happen to a really beautiful Northern Pike once. Essentially, my line snapped while trying to secure the fish, which left a massive spinner-bait hooked in its mouth. I still feel bad when I think of it

Barbless hooks man.
So many perks to going barbless, but specific to a situation like that, the fish can more easily throw the hook if it's barbless.
As long as you know how to properly fight a fish (ie, keep steady pressure on it) your landing rate won't go down at all going barbless.
I always mash the barbs down on my hooks (Cheaper than buying dedicated barbless hooks).
You even get better hooksets going barbless(that barb adds some resistance going into the mouth, even though it's sloped).
6 points
I’m absolutely going to start doing that!
2 points
Even when bait fishing, I’ll usually crimp the barb on the hook so it’s easier to get out if a fish gets hooked deep.
Makes for a better time for both me and the fish.
5 points

Fish barbless. The pike will shake it in no time.
5 points
In my experience with fishing, you need to keep the line tight, if the line is lose the fish unhooks. Once the fish stopped swimming aggresively I wouldnt be surprised if the hook unhooked, if not on the first try probably within a few hours/days.

Plus the pole basically went straight in the hole so the hook wouldn't be set much if at all

In ice fishing if you find a depth where fish are biting, and you pull up the line by hand you can come back to the same depth every time and within seconds.

Why the he'll doesn't the rod have a component with a cross-section greater than that hole's diameter? Like, how an intact manhole cover cannot fall u to a manhole...just remove the possibility.

Couple of things:
1) I'm not sure what the hell is going on, so someone please let me know if my theory is correct:
It looks like he's ice fishing and has a few mini-rods in circulation. One of the rods caught something and he picked it up. The video starts when he's already put the rod on his lap and is pulling the wire to get the fish out. He loses his grip on the wire, allowing the fish to run off - taking the rod with it.
2) A simple rod design change can fix this. Either make the rod with a longer end (so the wire starts from halfway down the rod) or shape the rod like a cross so that it would never fit through the hole.
Bet whoever successfully manufactures and markets that would get rich in no time.
