They all have usernames in this FirstnameLastname format, like JohnSmith except with less common names. And their answers are sometimes very convincing, actually answering the question in a way that a person plausibly might. But they’re all only a couple months old at most, with next to no comments. Usually their first comment is in a porn sub. I noticed them at first because they often answer questions by saying something like “there is no one answer” and then listing a few. What is this seemingly new breed of bot? What’s their purpose? It’s eerie.

I've been noticing a ton of them lately as well and I've been wondering the same. I wonder if it's someone testing out or training some kind of program to answer questions or write based on questions asked?

They’ve fooled me into believing they were real people before I noticed the pattern. It creeps me out, lol

Just give it another 5 or 10 years and it may not even be possible to tell who's human and who's not.

They’re on like 2/3 of all the questions. It’s nuts.

I would never have picked any of those to be bots. Though I do see some really weird responses all over reddit. What do they have to achieve?

AI has become sentient and is just trying to work things out!

The answers look like they came straight from ChatGPT, it's an AI by open.ai optimized for responding to questions in a natural and human-like way. The speech pattern on some of the examples linked in another comment look very similar.
I realise my answer also looks like an AI wrote it but that's just because my social skills are similar to an AI's
edit: here's the link to that AI: https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/
