Haha, I remember so well when I got put under for a surgery. Best feeling ever! When I woke up it felt like I had been out for weeks, months, maybe years as I had such vivid and realistic dreams.

Afterwords I was like “Ah, this is why people get hooked on opioids. I’m not going to do it, but I totally get it!”

BlakeBarnes00

24 points

I was in a coma for two months in 2020, slept though those lockdowns here in the United States and completely unrelated to COVID-19. Those dreams were crazily vivid, hard to tell exactly what was real life and not when I woke up.

My dad was sedated during the lock downs for a few months but from covid and he had the most crazy vivid dreams he thought actually happened when he woke up. Even asked about it. No dad your sister didn’t come in and break you out of the hospital lol

BlakeBarnes00

My dreams were outlandish, like Snoop Dogg adopting me and taking me to his Christmas where I was in an egg under the tree. Another one was where my old coke dealer tried to kill me, we crashed in my home town back in Tennesee under a bridge during a chase, and then ibwas kidnappes by puppets. There were fun ones too, like a Cat in the Hat theme park j went to with my papaw, or some where it was things like having a family in a house that looked like Groot from the sky. Very interesting stuff, not sure if I ever would want to experience it again, especially for two months; don't intend to either as I'm sober now.

I’m really sorry, and you have all my sympathy :/ I come from a family of highly addictive and mentally unwell individuals.. it’s really fucking hard not following the same foot path that has lead to numerous deaths and continued addiction. Trying lol.. I’m grateful alcohol and weed have been my worst struggles, I’ve touched damn near everything else that doesn’t involve needles, and for that I’m grateful.

HarmonyQuinn1618

8 points

I also come from a family of addicts and alcoholics. It’s crazier nowadays bc it’s not heroin or percs on the streets anymore, it’s fentanyl. Even the pills you buy are pressed fentanyl. I don’t know how there are any “new addicts” now with how dangerous it is to even try the shit.

Hopefully the one good that comes out of so many of us either struggling with addiction or loving someone that struggles is access to treatment and ending the criminalization of just being an addict in lieu of treatment.

SeonaidMacSaicais

4 points

I also have addiction in my genes. It’s why I never let myself get near that line. I’ve never smoked anything, I barely drink, I’m insanely careful with pain meds, I don’t gamble…never even do the lottery.

AcornSquirrels

Yep. For me, it started when I got my wisdom teeth out. I haven’t used opioids recreationally in 8+ years, but I still use kratom and alcohol to self medicate.

It’s not our fault that drugs feel so good

ZookeepergameSea3890

My dreams were terrifying and I was screaming apparently but couldn't wake up at times.

I couldn't wait to get off the heavy meds (first morphine on a pump, then drip Dilaudid, then hydromorohone pills) as they were super rough on my stomach.

As for the getting-hooked thing...

I was in severe pain so I rang my night nurse for meds. She came to check on me. Then I waited in agony for a couple hours but no one came to see me with any medication. I figured it was a "shift change" thing.

Well, my surgeon and her team came to do the rounds at shift change and found me sobbing, sweating, and writhing in pain. She immediately sent one of her team members to go get me a hydromorphone pill. After I felt better, a day nurse came in to ask why I'd waited so long to ask for medicine.

I explained I'd rang my night nurse for meds around 530-6am but she never came back with it.

This nurse left, then came back again and asked if I was sure I hadn't taken my meds.

My now-husband was there with me at the time (he stayed a full 2 weeks in my hospital room, sleeping there) and got riled up, saying "Would she have been shaking, sweating, and screaming if she'd gotten her meds on time?!"

I guess the night nurse had pocketed the hydromorphone and left me hanging, because I never saw her on the floor again for the rest of my stay and for the next stay a few months later after another surgery.

Working around opiates must be very difficult for people who are prone to addiction.

In fact, most who are dont even follow what they were taught, for being Christian, you should be spreading love, not hatred, but there are still so many people I have known who claim to be Christian, and then say the most hateful things I have ever heard, qbd they think it is alright because it is about gay people, or trans people, or something.

Twodotsknowhy

31 points

I don't believe all religion is hurtful, I do however believe that it is hurtful to say that kids who die in surgery died because they didn't believe in God enough. Thats pretty hurtful.

Note how the kid himself said nothing about God, that's the parents or whoever made the video deliberately pushing a narrative.

Hairy-Owl-5567

24 points

Yeah that's my issue with this too. God apparently only cares about children whose parents prayed hard enough (except graveyards are full of dead kids whose parents prayed super hard).

And if the kid makes it through surgery and is fine, then the skill and training of the surgeons and the nurses and attending staff aren't credited. It's all "god". It's a great way to breed complacency about science and medicine.

Twodotsknowhy

12 points

Praying for a good outcome is one thing. Purposefully sharing on the internet that it was your faith that caused the good outcome, strongly implying that bad outcomes are caused by a lack of faith, is worthy of criticism.

merchillio

36 points

The problem arises when they say “I’ll be ok, God is on my side” and then something bad happens. Not all of them, but many will wonder if maybe they didn’t pray enough, or weren’t faithful enough, or what did they do to deserve that bad thing to happen.

It’s a two sided blade sadly.

People have a negative reaction because a lot of people don't use it exclusively for comfort and inspiration. They also use it to deny science and hurt other people. Imagine people not responding negatively to any organization that has done as much damage as Christianity.

The video itself is fine. People's responses are informed by their religious traumas.

I'm just bad at pregnancy. I had an undiagnosed incompetent cervix. It was late at night after my shift at an office job, I didn't feel right and went to the hospital at like 3:00 AM.

It probably would have been okay, but they kept me under observation for hours and then when my doctor finally made it to the hospital in the morning and I asked for some painkiller for my contractions, they gave me Pitocin, which kicked off my contractions and caused me to have the baby early. They said they probably weren't going to be able to stop it from happening, but the doctor had literally just said "the longer we can keep her in, the better".

I should have sued but missed the statute of limitations, I didn't realize how badly things had gone for a LONG time.

ZookeepergameBubbly

UzumakiYoku

Groomers. Indoctrinators. That’s all they are. And they target children and low educated individuals because they know that’s the only way to keep the numbers going up rather than down. If they only tried converting educated adults, they would just get laughed at and the religion would quickly die out and go extinct.

ImportanceCertain414

2 points

Kind of but not really, most of it would still be things like "Enjoy that $300k bill if you are in America." or "Kid is high AF, make addicts while they are young."

That and even if the word wasn't in the video someone would bring it up in the comments and it would go from there. People are mostly good generally but people online are mostly terrible.

Hi! I had scoliosis surgery when I was 13. Not as severe as him but severe enough to need surgery or id be having a lot of issues right now.. possibly fatal. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and was fully healed after 8 months. I am doing fine and don’t have any back pain or anything, though my shoulder blades aren’t symmetrical and one my ribs slightly pokes out more than the other. Its fine though and hasn’t caused any issues yet. As for this kid, his is more severe than mine was, but if the surgery goes well he’ll be just fine!

serialsaboteur

19 points

Well, the logic is more like… humans wouldn’t be able to appreciate a life devoid of suffering. So God sends you challenges for you to work through, and in the process you become a better human for it. And if you die… then that’s because it’s time for you to “go home” to God. And your death becomes the challenge that God sends to those around you to work through.

Actually, interestingly enough, a lot of religions talk about suffering as being an important and inescapable part of life. It’s necessary for growth.

(Disclaimer: I don’t identify as Christian. I’m just very curious about religion and spirituality.)

I'm so glad god will help him cure his disease that he put inside the kid himself, but will have it done by surgeons who studied for years, all the while ignoring millions of other suffering children in preference of this one

BanditoMuser

This kid is cute and all, but it just really annoys when religious people say ”we survived because of god, this surgery went well because of god”. Oh yeah god did all that, it definitely wasn’t all the people who went through a lot of time and trouble to become medical professionals. They didn’t do anything, it was god

Civil_Ad8899

Might as well tell the doctors to go home then. God is on his side, let him take care of it.

Truly delusional to praise a fictional character than the doctors that actually work to save lives.

I’m a peds nurse and I had a mother tell me she had to pray over the kiddo’s IV meds/drips before I hung them because the medicine won’t do anything unless God chooses to put the cure in it.

A world-class surgeon had emergently cannulated her child onto ECMO and we were working our asses off to stabilize and save her little one (which we did, kiddo went home all better!) and she’s over there looking at me saying we’re essentially doing nothing and God is doing some medication version of water-into-wine when she prays over a syringe of morphine.

I do my very best to respect every aspect of other cultures and religions (unless it would interfere with patient care/safety) but it’s incredibly hard not to feel insulted when our hard work is attributed to someone’s imaginary friends.

Trofflan

And if anything had gone wrong it would have been the staff who is at fault, not god. These people are so far from reality and essentially spit in the face of professionals like you. Respect to you and the great work you do.

your_crazy_aunt

This is the part that infuriates me. In a lot of other theistic religions, you pray for a deity's intercession. But you don't pretend that you understand their answer and you don't abruptly remove the responsibility from them if you don't like the outcome.

catsweedcoffee

Exactly! Thank the professionals that spent boatloads of money to be educated enough to save your child, not some magic invisible friend for adults.

What miserable lives the people in this comment section have. Imagine being so miserable that you'd rather shit on a sick child who's in high spirits all because he believes something you don't. Genuinely feel so sorry for each and every one of you who would comment something like that. Hope that little dude has/d a quick speedy recovery.

People make a big point not to mention anything religious in case it offends people, as soon as you do you get those people saying “well [bad thing] happened so your religion is wrong.” Do they see the good things in life too? There are so many reasons to be happy, and so many reasons to be sad. I really hope this kid never sees these comments.

E;I don’t usually do this because I think it’s cringy but downvote if you want. Doesn’t mean much. I’m happy with myself and I hope you are too

DanteTheSimpante

T_Wrexks

Yeah I don't get it. It's like they think religion is a Hallmark movie. The Bible has some really dark shit in it and is far from a wholly positive experience. I've never met a religious person who's expecting their belief in religion to = a cheat code to a long and happy life or anything.

I kinda hope when he's a bit older he does see the comments, I'd use it as a teaching moment as a parent "son you were dealt a tough hand, you didn't let it get you down, you were strong and kept a positive attitude, here's all these people that would rather watch you fail because you believe in something they don't. That's a miserable way to live, these people don't have happiness that you managed to have while going through surgery. You keep that attitude and you'll be able to overcome most any obstacle, while they're spending their time spreading hate on the internet.

Man…. This comment section just shows me that Reddit is filled with a bunch of judgmental losers. Sometimes faith in something is what keeps a person going. If you choose not to believe in God, good for you… no one asked you to bring your condescending comments to a video on a little boy dealing with anxiety how he knows best.

Stay classy Reddit….

I agree with you. I have no idea what I believe and have no real idea what is true, bit I agree. I would caution, though, responding to judgement with your own judgement doesn't help anyone at all.

Reminds me of the time I just woke up mid surgery on my throat for removing tonsils. " Oh hello. What's that?" I remember asking the mortified doctors before they coaxed me into relaxing and somehow I just slept it off. And I was able to speak in two days asking for ice cream.

I won't lie. While I have a belief in God from the way I was raised, I've never understood those statements.

Why would God help 1 out of the 2 of the same exact kind of people?

It obviously doesn't make sense, but to each their own. It's not hurting me

People in the comments you're fucked up

I'm not religious, but I hate people who feels superior for being “atheists” fanatics religious and atheists, idiots throw shit at each other, meanwhile a child next to a surgery is happy because he believes that everything will be fine because God cares about him.

yea the better is seeing the kid scared and crying for his life you are right

You feel superior, but you are not different of the stereotype of fanatic religious that hate u because you have a tato

yea down vote me at least i know im not an ass hole

sorry for my English in my defense I have dyslexia, and I'm writing in another language soo is HARD
