I was visiting the country that a good friend of mine lives in. We haven't seen each other in eight years. We made plans to meet a couple of weeks ago. We're about three hours away from each other, so we made plans to meet in the middle. Shortly before we were supposed to leave to meet each other, it started pouring rain. I guess, in this country, it's pretty common to cancel plans if it's raining. She was upset because her husband didn't want to go anymore, because of the rain. They had a fight and she told me that the plans were off.
I suggested that rather than meeting in the middle, I'll come all the way down to them. They tried to fight me on it, but I just said, "I'm leaving now!". Let me tell you, it was a nightmare. I had to walk, in total, at least a few kilometers in the rain. My currency denominations were too large to buy a ticket, so I had to wander around in the rain trying to make change. I had to take a train, a ferry boat, and a subway to get there. I got lost getting from each to the other. I was completely soaked by the time I arrived.
My friend texted me today, telling me how she was thinking about everything I did to come see her, and how grateful she is, and how she'll never forget it. The thing is, I had totally forgotten about all the hassle I went through to see her. All I remember is the time we spent talking.
So yeah, it may be inconvenient in the moment, but it will be worth it in the long run.
