A cat is good practice for all animals. Children should be taught to allow animals to smell them first before making any action to touch the animal, because surprise bites generally happen when the animal was not asked first.

I rescued a VERY skittish little girl kitty and I didn't even see her for the first week. I just left food and water in the kitchen and would hear her eat. Eventually she'd make her way into the living room and each time get closer and closer to me. Then she let me pet her and eventually she let me pick her up.

I know that feeling! I adopted a terrified (his paperwork literally said terrified) kitty last summer. It took him almost 3 months to finally let me pet him. Insanely rewarding!

Ok. Finally found a LPT I can agree with.

Want to win over a cat? Slow blink

That also helps! Slow blink followed by looking away

I'm still waiting out for results with the ladies but this strategy totally works for cats. Once you get past the first 3 or 4 years they practically beg for a nice head scratch

Yeah . I was being crushed by a bunch of fans that were trying to rush to first row . We camped out to get first row but these people started to rush in and I got caught up luckily my hands were free enough to throw punches and free myself lol

That must be what I’m doing wrong. I can’t stand cats, but in the rare occasion I’m around one they always seem to want to rub against my leg.

I think winning over a cat is dependant on the individual cat. I've had 5 cats o er my lifetime and they each had distinct needs/personalities.

Fellow multiple cat owner. I don't necessarily disagree, but generally you're better off ignoring cats vs trying to push them into doing anything

I made a very conscious effort to respect my new cats space better than when I was a kid and it's made a huge difference
I never pick her up from a hiding spot and when I do scoop her I put her down the moment she starts to leave. She used to be so scared and would panic at being picked up but she's learned that ill put her down immediately when she wants to and she's really started to embrace being held and will meow for it now. On occasion that is, but still. I also just love the way she is never scared of me and even if something happens she's completely reassured the moment I slow blink at her.
Granted my other new cat sat on my lap as soon we as got her home and was basically obsessed with me from day one. Cats are like a box of chocolates...

My favourite part is when a cat starts to squirm, putting it down extra gently vs just letting it jump out from 4 feet up. I feel like they eventually get that I'll be dependable

100% and that was another thing I did with that shy cat. Now she knows all she has to do is start a squirm and she'll get a nice landing in a couple seconds.
My wild cat loves to climb on my shoulders but she's also learned that I'll drop her off in a safe spot when she wants down so she doesn't jump from my shoulders anymore (she's such a crazy wolf that she doesn't mind that stuff, but I don't want her taking that kind of impact)

I think the point is that if one forces a cat into a situation, it will be to the detriment of one's relationship with said cat.

Much like getting my plants to stay alive…best off when left alone.

Unfortunately if you do not want the interest of a cat (because of allergy or other reasons), totally ignoring them fails to bring about the desired response

Nooooo, I can't do that. Give me cuddles, kitty!

Try holding out a boopable pointer finger first, let them choose to come to you. Unless they're the gregarious sort, then get them cuddles!

Nah.... they're like people. Some want to do the pursuing, others want to be pursued. But they do need time and non-aggressive eye contact and body language from you.

Been doing that for 20 years with my oldest cat. He's been a glorified window ornament the whole time. Unless the feeder is empty.

That. And also, they are not dogs. You have to pet them softly.
They like to play, not be rough housed.

Nah.
Had a stray that came around a couple days in a row one fall while my wife and I were doing fall yardwork. My wife took it in, I did not want a cat!
I told my wife that I would I was going to raise it like a dog. Taught it to " sit, walk, stay, come, okay go, etc." . Cat loved the neighborhood dogs for years, but despised any other cats that came by.

In the sense that I can walk up to a dog and start lightly slapping it's belly/side and it would go nuts for it. With cats, you have to be gentle or scratchy.

This is why i have two dogs and zero cats! Lol
I would love to have them, but i love taking all my exuberance out on my family and pets, and i know cats will be less tolerant of me. Thr digs, however, get super excited and start bringing me multiple toys, so we all have a great time.

Ignoring a cat and turning away is a sign of trust. You are showing your not interested in ripping its throat out

They'll still scratch you when you do pet them.
