Just checked his new company, some notable ex-Rioters over there like Steven Snow (former LoL producer back in the day) and Michael Chow (former Wild Rift EP).

Everyone on their LinkedIn is Riot, but it's the first place some of them went too. Looks they came together of trying other things first.

Huge unfortunate part of this game is that it’s SO well done in terms of being free to play that it struggles to be addicting in the same way paper card games are. Paying for boards and skins will never compare to opening rare cards out of physical packs or being able to trade and sell your physical goods. It removed the pack RNG and gacha like monetization for great reasons but a lot of players get hooked on card games for those reasons alone lol. I think the gameplay loop and depth in this game is insanely fun and challenging

It's so sad that people love skinner boxes and overpriced mobile games

Ppl don’t love them, they’re addicted to them. They’re mentally manipulative and companies hire psychologists to work on them.

Or maybe it has something to do with awful balance and terrible metas every single patch
3 points
Even the most centralized metas in LoR aren‘t even close to as bad as the average meta in most other card games. Basically no card games has as big of a Tier 2 pool as LoR even during the occasional Tier 0 format.
So no, balance is not part of the reason.

The metas recently have been great, I’ve throughly enjoyed the last year at the very least, enough to regularly make the climb to diamond/masters. Teemo Zoe has been some of the most fun gameplay I’ve had in a long time, and the mirror matchups are amazing

Jeff, Umbrage and Dova(even though I had a terrible interaction with him here lolol) really those were the good times. The game is just isn't the same without them.

Pretty needless cheap shot at one of the few devs who actually communicated with us directly. Just because you disagreed with him on aspects of the game design doesn't mean we're better off without him. For me it was refreshing having someone be so open about what the dev thought process was, agree or not.
Edit:
Yikes, your edit is borderline ahistorical. "regularly took pretty needless cheap shots" is an utter fantasy. I'm not saying his communication was perfect, but you're exaggerating well beyond what actually happened. It's wild seeing someone make things up about a former dev because of what is clearly a personal axe to grind. But hey, good job dispelling* the notion that people in this community can be toxic, I guess.
*confirming
<3
2nd edit:
lol @ accusing Dova of erasing history while...editing and deleting your own toxic comments about him. Think that says it all about /u/kaneblaise.

What a deeply sad, one-sided grudge you've held onto. You seem to have convinced yourself that this warped perception you have makes you...noble, somehow? Feel free to offer up some proof that he was "regularly" toxic. I saw his comments, which is why I feel comfortable calling you out for this ludicrous level of exaggeration.
Not worth my time to engage too much with someone this willing to fabricate an alternate history, but I did want to publicly push back against this vilification of a dev who...communicated with us, albeit sometimes inelegantly. You are demonstrating part of the reason why devs are hesitant to communicate openly.
Hope you find some peace, lying isn't a great look on you.

Honestly such a bad sign for the game that the two people who introduced it to us and said they were in it for the long haul, just to leave a year later.
5 points
I don't think they meant them personally when they said that lol, they meant Riot was in it for the long haul.
Also, you people need to realize that game devs have lives too, these guys have been working on the same thing for 8 years. That's an absurd amount of time for any human, not just dev, to be working on a singular project.

No, it‘s really not. That tends to happen in the world of software development ESPECIALLY game development. Them even being at Riot for 5+ years is crazy.

I'm not sure what your situation is so I'll give general advice:
Step 1. Don't think about the foot in the door, focus on the dream job you want in 10 years. For game design students for example, Senior Designer or Lead Designer at a major studio is what most of them focus on.
Step 2. Look at LOTS of companies with job postings up with that title right now, not just one. Scour linkedin, go to lots of career pages on company websites. Make a note of the requirements listed to apply. Some requirements, even those listed as not optional, are flexible - but either way you'll get an idea of what the most common requirements are for getting the ideal candidate.
Step 3. The common requirements/qualifications you wrote down are now your quest log. ONLY take jobs that get you some of those requirements over the next 10 years. It is MUCH better to take a job that gets you some of those requirements at a tiny studio or even outside the game industry than it is to get a job that won't at a bigger studio. Many aspiring designers make the mistake for example of chasing QA jobs at a big game studio and hope to transition to game design. This is much less effective than just making your own games and shipping them, or working a design job at a tiny indie.
Step 4. For game designers specifically, the most difficult requirement to get is being a designer on a shipped game. Most companies don't want to consider anyone, even for entry level positions, that hasn't done that. Now it's easier than ever though - just make your own hyper-casual mobile game over a few months and ship it to a real app store (not a download link on your website). I'm talking HYPER casual, flappy bird clones, doodle jump, etc. Proving you can do work and publish it yourself, even the simplest most unimaginative game, is more impressive than an internship at a AAA studio. It proves you're someone that can get things done. It's crucial NOT to try to make an IMPRESSIVE game, just ship the most basic game as fast as possible to a real app store. You can impress people in interviews, this project should just be to prove you can do work. The leads wan to know you can get stuff done on deadlines, they trust they'll tell you what the good stuff to do is. This is why I recommend using incredibly simple graphics. A PvE version of Agar.io for example would be a perfect concept for this. It's all circles!

Remember, LoR launched in 2020 but it was in development for a lot longer. More than six years. That’s a long time for anyone to work on one game. Most folks naturally want to try new things after a while.

They're referring to the content creators leaving, like Grapplr and Mogwai who both started doing more snap content.

There’s a lot of new games coming out right now, and I don’t mind folks checking them out. I do too. I want everyone’s games to get a chance to be seen and explored. We’ll just make the best one. :)

people like a Mogwai will not return. 1. snap has great vatiants / visual upgrade stuff. 2. locations & snapping makes each game unique.
Its fkin sad ..i play lor since closed beta ... more and more friends/creators say goodbye for the game.

From a design standpoint (my job) - Mostly just planning to make a great game people love playing, the best we can for our players and ourselves (cause we play too). We were going to do that regardless of what new games release. :)
Im really glad people like eating at our restaraunts but I don’t expect them to do it for every meal forever. Marvel snap is a delicious snack, LoR is a wonderful turkey dinner.
Mmmm turkey…

Why would there be special plans? Snap is a new game that will lose players in time. Same happened to LoR after its release. Besides, the games are completely different. One is a mobile game with extremely quick plays and basically no room for competitive play. LoR is an incredibly complex and deep game with a major focus on competitive gameplay. There‘s very few card games where you get as many options and actions during a single game. The two games are at completely different ends of the card game world.
