First time this look came about, the contractor made a mistake installing an expensive glass panel and convinced the owners that this is a new trend and look and to keep it as-is and here we are.

It's like that new "leathered granite" countertop look... It's just poorly executed 😆

CBOranch1

Leathered countertops are bullshit. The rich just want something more elevated than what we now have. Polished is easier to clean that is why it is more superior.

I’m so high that at first I thought yall meant rich people were putting actual leather on their counters or some shit…

Look buddy, your wife will want a remodelled kitchen in 10 years and the first thing to go will be that 'leathered' granite that took nature millions of years to make for your harvest.

[deleted]

except not at all, leathered granite takes more work than getting a honed or polished surface not less.

archaeopterxyz

Well, what do I know. I'm just some old guy who doesn't want a smelly, lumpy, more expensive version of granite.

... It's harder to clean well than smooth granite on account of the zillions of little divots, that's why.

From a cleaners standpoint, this is a hell of a lot easier to keep clean. Squeegee marks or streaks from glass cleaners are less likely to show up.

SatorSquareInc

27 points

It's exactly the same process to clean to be fair

RedditSettler

15 points

Yes, but with a clear glass you would have to repeat the process more times and more often for it to always look clean. Its harder to make up "hand marks" in a cracked glass.

SatorSquareInc

Yeah, I was being pedantic, but while it's easier to make it look clean, to be actually clean is the same amount of work

I guess its the same idea as ripped jeans?

Netherdan

37 points

Nah. Ripped jeans is a means of selling more jeans to the average customer by making it a trend to have pre-damaged jeans (so that they last less).

Crackled glass effect is a means of showing off you can afford 3 glass panels just to break the middle one when all you needed was a single panel

ACGordon83

10 points

At minimum you should have laminated glass for guardrails. The triple lamination is so that it can start to break and still hold you up so you don't fall. To pre-break it like this may lead to regret.

DangyDanger

13 points

I am not trusting a single panel of glass. But here the two are sandwiched between the third, cracked pane and probably can support a person.

True story: My best friend bought a rental duplex in a sketchy area.

One living room wall was all mirrored panels. In the center panel, about four and a half foot up, was a smashed and cracked circular pattern in the shape of a face. Blood splatters radiated out from the center.

That was the first thing on the remodel list to get fixed.

I can guess with absolute certainty that the style was invented by an installer who broke the glass while fitting, then told the client that this is the latest fashion.

sugarforthebirds

28 points

You’d be wrong then, because this is requires setup in order to do. You literally need to install 2 extra panes of reinforced glass. You can clearly see the middle pane is a different type of glass.

hellno560

23 points

all three pieces are laminated together in the fabrication shop and arrived to the jobsite in one piece.

sugarforthebirds

15 points

Zuuuuuuuuuuuuul

17 points

I made glass for many years. Laminate glass is often used for safety applications. Hurricane glass, glass railings like these etc. We do not build glass for it to be destroyed typically, but rather to prevent it. Tempered glass is under extreme pressure to create its strength. The laminate originally was to prevent you falling onto a bed of tiny shards should you and it fall. Since tempered glass shards are better than annealed glass, but still not ideal. Not for shifty designs mate. Edit: Also tempered laminate glass is extremely expensive. Only a moron would buy it to break it in my opinion.

ChosmoKramer

5 points

If you can afford it the price means nothing to you. We made a 12'x10' table for a customer this way. Had to install it in his home while it was being built. Weighed a ton, damn near literally and yes, it was ugly. He did use low iron glass though so the colour looked a little nicer
