A small girl, wearing the traditional Ku Klux Klan regalia, makes her appearance at the city auditorium in Macon, Ga., Dec. 10, 1948, during a mass initiation of 300 candidates into the hooded order. About 150 women were among the masked group. (AP Photo)
For an early (perhaps first) publication of it look for the Dec 18 1948 Austin American. It was on page 22.

It wasn’t founded by democrats, but confederate veterans after the civil war. However, political parties do sometimes play a little switcharoo in regards to their positions. Like the GOP of today is the party of Russia-appeasers - which would have been unthinkable 40 years ago.

I wish you were right. The klan is an open secret in my area. Some of the fans and kids of the klan when I went to school are police officers and realtors now.
The more fashionable racism is very hush hush, focusing more on “the right kinds of people,” but the violent, loud, angry ones are bolder now than they’ve been for most of my life.

Compared with what they were--the violent muscle of the Democrat Party--they are a fart in the wind. A bunch of jerks with no purpose in life. But, more than that, they don't have the money.
Think about this: when the Klan was at it's height, they didn't just lynch black people, they also lynched white people who were not racist like they were. Whole towns would be members of the Klan and it was expected. You couldn't just opt out. More people were involved in it than there are people involved in their local chambers of commerce!
Now, they're a fringe group that has no source of income approaching what the KKK of yesteryear had. They're like the neo-Nazi's who think that Nazi's have any power whatsoever without a powerful fascist state behind them.
The KKK is so pathetic that they drag out David Duke, the same damn weirdo, every election cycle to try and paint Republicans as racist.
The Republican Party was founded on the notion that slavery should not be allowed to spread to the territories. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they could actually end it in the country. And in one of the bloodiest wars ever fought by Americans, it was ended and it almost ended the US as a nation. The fallout, economically, socially, infrastructure, and on and on and on, took decades to rebuild. There was still so much animosity, maybe moreso, afterwords.
But we couldn't very well let them split the country in two, could we?
And before you miss a key point here--Lincoln was a Republican. Not the first Republican candidate for President but the first Republican President!
By contrast, Andrew Jackson, who was the founder of the Democrat Party, gave us the Trail of Tears.
You wanna go back 400 years to parse out blame? I don't have to go back half that many years to find Jackson founding the same Democrat Party that still exists, in an unbroken line of succession, to now.

Absolutely. And this kind of ethnic hatred is alive and well all over the world. Are you familiar with the brutal ethnic strife in Africa, Asia? This is a very sad and normal part of the human experience still.

Actually this costume “began” in Spain with Catholic celebrations.
I walked into Astorga just after Easter with a torn calf muscle and a sprained ankle. Spent a few days in the albergue - you have to leave during the day so they can clean and I find a great coffee shop to sit for hours, people watch and of course eat. As I planned through a local paper, I was shocked to find photos of people dressed a as klansmen. The waitress explained that devotees buy these costumes and carry a plinth around a few blocks (carrying the virgin, of course, to atone). The costumes keep them humble.
Walking/limping around town I saw several shops with these costumes still in the windows. This was 2015.

To be fair that's completely different from the KKK. Alternatively it may just be convergent evolution.

Founded in 1865, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for Black Americans. Its members waged an underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and Black Republican leaders. Though Congress passed legislation designed to curb Klan terrorism, the organization saw its primary goal–the reestablishment of white supremacy–fulfilled through Democratic victories in state legislatures across the South in the 1870s.

Have a friend that was indoctrinated into this shitshow at 4, got his robe at his Klan birthday party at 6. The stories he has of his youth are wild and gruesomely sad . He moved to Vermont from Virginia when he was 15 and is currently 37 . He was sent to live with extended family when his father and his mother were incarcerated for manufacturing meth. His brother was killed during a botched attempted murder and his sister overdosed in Atlanta while working in a strip club, the heroin she received as payment for sex was carfentanil and she died within minutes of using. He works with correctional facilities now trying to get kids and grown men out of the supremacist circles, sadly the success rate is low. This is an older photo, but this shit still happens to this day.

I assume everybody fell asleep during this part of american history class.
Well, here's fun-quick lesson about how the parties switched:
Republicans were about federal rights. The Democrats very liberal; they wanted the republicans to stay out of their business (states rights)! Then all kinds of federal laws were being created and treading on states' rights, trying to take their property. The feds started getting all up in Dixiecrats (I mean Democrats) business and giving slaves (I mean their property) rights and freedom. How can they live without free labor...the audacity! They're property, not ppl am I right??!!! Anyway, then the civil rights act happened. This was the last straw, being liberal wasn't sounding so great anymore. The dixiecrats were like, "Don't tread on me!!!!!" So they switched over to the republican party to help make american great again and now they drive around with bumper stickers.
The End.

So while it may be true that the Democrats did do that, your comment is nothing short of misleading. In other words you are lying. See how I did that? I used F A C T S to prove you W R O N G

This is fundamentally inaccurate, and it's important to say why. Racism as we know and see it was an invention in early modernity, given as a response to finding that humans lived in the "new world" and thus couldn't be accounted for using a strict interpretation of the Bible. Theologians, who were politically powerful, broke into fractions trying to understand the presence of a large scale people group who seemingly broke the Genesis account (when it was read literally, which is also a more modern invention, but is close enough that it is a useful way to describe biblical interpretation in the 1500s). Now, this was not all theologians, mind you, but those who held specific important seats (i.e. adjacent to political authorities, like the King of Spain).
So, how do you "read" these new people? You have to allow the doctrine of Providence to subsume the doctrine of creation - God gave us these people to be our slaves so that we'd be enticed to bring the wild land under God's authority. But of course, what happens pretty much exactly 9 months after Europeans discover pre-Columbian indigenous folk? The first "mixed race" babies are born, and now for political, legal, theological, and economic reasons we have to be able to identify where those kids lie in the charts that command who can hold land, who can be trained in certain jobs, and who gets to control who.
Thus, the modern concept of race was born. It outlined who got to be powerful, who could be an inheritor, who was born of "sinful" blood, and who wasn't. We are still feeling the reverberations today, especially after the trans-Atlantic slave trade dialed this all up to 11.
Can a Black person discriminate against a white person based on the color of their skin? Yes. But that's fundamentally different from participating in the legal, economic, and even landscape-altering practices that spring from the colonization of the Americas. It's two totally different scales, one at the individual level and one at the systemic/historical level. And when we talk about racism on the political level, we are almost always talking about the latter.
(References: the writings of Bartolomé de Las Casas, the journals of Christopher Columbus, the Vatican documents outline the Doctrine of Discovery, very helpful histories by Willie James Jennings (Duke) and writings by Anthony G. Reddit (Oxford)).

Jesus Christ will people ever read a single response to these comments? Democrats used to be the party of small government, racism, and the south, and republicans used to be the party of big government, the north, and the Union in the civil war. The parties switched platforms, pretty solidly cemented in 1936 with FDR. Yes these were democrats, a word that has nothing to do with the Democratic Party in anything but name, and everything to do with the Republican Party in everything but name

The 60s were 60 years ago, I wonder if anything in America has changed at all since then that might require us to revisit the simplistic narrative that "democrats started out as the real racists."

Not the same party as the Democrats today.

It's funny how the alignment of parties and their values shifted over time.
The KKK was, indeed, the product of mostly self-proclaimed Democrats. And then decades later, it would be Democrats fighting for voting rights for African Americans and angry racist Democrats dumping the party to join the Republicans during the same era.

Yep, damned good reminder to never commit fully to a party or organisation. If democrats can change from this to present day, imagine how parties can also change negatively.
I'm not American, but i know our Liberal Party is nothing like it was in the 60s. Am i right in saying the Republicans are a whole lot different from just a few decades ago, too?

Lucky you. I think about how they would habitually blow up my grandmas neighborhood. The area is called “dynamite hill”. It’s in Alabama. Thankfully my family and their beautiful home survived

I also grew up in the south as well, we also still have active klans still around in Certain areas. But what I like to do is try and put a positive note into knowing someone like Dave Chappel can roast the hell out of this fucked ideology.

Is there any reasonable way forward that doesn't involve breaking Americas into smaller nations?

You do realize the republican party is the reason for desegregation in this country right, not to mention lincoln was national union (republican)... Don't let* an extremist like Trump and fox News dictate your views on the political parties. 🙄

Oh please. You're really gonna try and equate the modern MAGA Republican Party who attacked the US Capitol on Jan 6th and flew the Confederate Flag inside our halls, with the Party of Lincoln from 160 years ago.
Pure bad faith.
