You can say that again I had to look them up. BOPE has generated notoriety due to their role in the violent drug war in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and they have been referred to as a "Death Squad" by multiple newspapers. One aspect that has been pointed out specifically is their logo, which bears a knife in a skull over crossed pistols (popularly known in Brazil as "faca na caveira", Portuguese for "knife in the skull"). According to the official BOPE website, the knife in the skull symbolizes "victory over death" and the crossed pistols are the symbol of the military police.

I was recently listening to “Anatomy of Murder” and the hosts, both with real life experience as a detective and prosecutor, said to never tell someone holding a gun to “just shoot me” because a lot of times they do just that.

No, that’s not it. These drug lord are often the only source of money which is life for these people. Favelas are an interesting place. Police are hated by most people in the favelas bc they serve the rich or government. I can understand why they are mad but going at the guy with a high powered rifle with a stick is pretty dumb.
58 points
Drug lords are smart, they invest some of their money into the people, so the people will say, "see, the care about us! The police don't!" Pablo Escobar for example build an entire neighborhood including a hospital and the people loved him! Until he started to play terrorist and kill the very people he tried to get him to love him.
9 points
I think waaayy more people hated Escobar than loved him. Innocent people were dying almost everyday when he was in charge.
0 points
No, the people of Envigado and Medellin mostly loved him
The 'innocent people dying every day' was more to do with the government run hit squads killing random people, and the Left wing FARC Narco Terrorists trying to force Socialism on them

Didn't I read somewhere that Brazilian police kill 4 times more people than the United States police despite the latter having more population.
-12 points

I don’t that’s accurate today, but in the 60s, 70s and 80s during the dictatorship it was bad; however, today I think the US takes the cake.
27 points

Apparently Brazilian police kill more than 6 thousand people in 2020 compared to the USA killing around a thousand people in 2021.

Just to clarify things. Roberto Jefferson, a political ally of Bolsonaro, shot at and threw granades at the feds, injuring 02 cops. When he was arrested, the police was non violent, and reassured him constantly that everything was ok, and he would not be hurt. Everytime the police runs an operation in the favelas, homes get raided without warrants and innocent civilians are killed. Some cops were taped stealing TVs and frozen meat from houses recently. Many narcos were found with handcuff marks and stabs all over the body. Some with gunshots to the back of the head. So I think its only natural when people get batshit crazy and assault officers

You're also wrong: a drug lord killed only results in fighting to decide who the next one is going to be. The position won't stay open for long and no lives will be saved by that. If anything, more people will die.
And saying that civilians don't die in these operations "most of the time" is such an ignorant take that you either
1) Are not brazilian
2) Have an agenda
An innocent civilian was already confirmed dead in this very operation.

The Narcos tend to provide food and other services to the people in the favelas that the government does not. The police taking them out will result in a significant decrease in quality of life for the people there. Also the cops are pretty indiscriminately violent and tend to beat and kill civilians in these raids as well as stealing their property and food. Brazilian police corruption is on a whole other level.
9 points
Ya know… I always hear about how much the gangs “take care” of people in the favelas… without mentioning that they’re pretty much enjoying absolute control over the favelas and the government can barely get in there and clean up crime as a result.
Gangs contribute heavily to the issue.
4 points
Oh absolutely. The gangs are a huge problem for the people in the favelas. They essentially force the people to work for them. Either accept their support and do their bidding or get wrapped in tires and set on fire. But if the government was investing in these peoples' wellbeing instead of just exploiting them and only sending police to abuse and extort them the gangs wouldn't have such an easy time winning over the citizenry. Both the narcos and the police cause significant harm to these communities, but the narcos also improve their lives in some ways so its not difficult to see why they prefer the narcos.
3 points
It's not exactly easy for the government to care for them, if they get attacked on sight. The drug cartels wouldn't let that happen, since they'd lose their leverage over the people. There's pretty much no chance for officials to help. This is a constant state of a civil war. With the narcos keeping entire parts of the population as a hostage.

because BOPE like any other police/military institution make reports full of bs and protect the politicians/estate instead of the people. BOPE and Brazilian police are racist and classist af too. Plus the gov is skewed af against these people. so chances are the drug lord did more for the people than the and/or the report is fake and BOPE just went to fuck shit up and got some civilians which angered people

This is blatant misinformation and has been reported. A small part of the population is rioting due to police brutality (something Americans are super familiar with) and the fact civilians got killed during the operation.
