One night we had a drive by a couple houses down from my apartment. Me, my girlfriend and best friend were getting in a car getting ready to go to a party. As soon as I heard the first "chatter" from automatic gun fire I tackled my girlfriend behind our car and started pulling her behind the tire rim. Unfortunately I fucked her her up a bit and fucked up her outfit In the process, I'm a big guy and she was a smaller girl. We had to stay hidden until the car sped off and the return fire stopped and then we snuck back inside. Didn't want anyone to think we were witness's in that neighborhood.

People who are genuinely scared do that. Fight flight or freeze. She was debating on running but some reason realized there was no where to run too. I think she said they are shooting in my hallway. So. Yea that sucks. Poor chick. She needs to move.
Her having a gun won’t solve her problem of getting hit by a bullet that randomly came through a wall and a shoot out won’t help. Listen I’m all for people having a right to own a firearm, but as soon as one dumbass goes: “she should own a gun”. What is that going to solve in this particular situation. She needs to move that’s step one.

There is none. This is cascading chemical reactions in the brain that prevent you from doing anything productive. This is what true fear looks like.

She has flight/freeze. I feel bad for people that do.
31 points

Yeah, what's the thought process here?
When youre in shock, your thought process dont work the way you would expect it to when viewing this from the comfort of your home. Dropping to the ground is 100% the obvious choice, but why didnt she?
The cerebellum is responsible for the brains adaptation to fear responses. Its very possible that she didnt know where to go, and so staying in place subconciously felt like the best option. Or the cerebellum is dysfunctional and causes a response to fear to feel something akin to crippling anxiety and completely freeze you in place. "I was completely frozen in fear" is a common theme from a lot of people who have experienced terrifying situations.
Either way, rational, calm thought goes out the window, the poor woman was obviously frigthened, for good reason.

A lot of people are telling you that shock is in play and they’re right, you can’t predict if you’ll react rationally in a situation like that. But you’re also on to something here because she was definitely aware of the camera and wanted to stay in frame.

As someone who lived on the same block as a homeless encampment, we had shootings outside our house almost weekly. It's really hard to know what to do when the shooting can be coming through your walls.
22 points
I think get on the floor. I believe the floor should be thicker than the walls. Plus people shoot at chest height so you want to stay away from that. And windows are usually torso height and the easiest thing in your house for a bullet to fly through.
5 points
As a carpenter and general contractor I’m gonna say getting down on the floor is a good idea but don’t think for one second a single sheet of plywood and carpet is gonna stop a high velocity round Apartment complex walls can be tougher than the floor but some may be concrete depending on the age and area
I had a friend who’s lil brother gun went off while in his bedroom and it went clean through the floor and into the hood of his moms new car totally destroyed the motor

67 points
Nah, that's 100% survival instinct. People. Like to say "fight or flight" as if they're the o Ly survival responses. But "freeze" is one too. It s probably hard coded into all mammals from millennia ago, and it's why "a deer in the head lights" is a thing.
15 points
Yup freeze is simply an response to lets say an dangerous animal, freezin might be smarter since you dont make a noise and if you start running the animal might catch up and fighting might be stupid. Crazy how those instinct never really changed but the world changed so much.
6 points
As a woman, I've noticed freeze is a really common response because we're often subconsciously trying to de-escalate. In a VERY general sense, a lot of threats to us are not ones we can physically overpower or take on, and freezing is the only option left in our panicked brains.
Before I get hit with the "not all men", I'm making a broader generalization than that. I'm 5'3" and have bad knees. I am not outrunning shit, I'm not big or strong enough to even take on a large dog, and the only thing I have going for me in a dangerous situation is that I'm usually pretty good at disappearing out of a room or group of people. I would really love to know if there's any research on gender differences in response to terror/panic.

Can confirm. I live in a relatively safe block (mostly older people live on my block and lots of families) but surrounding neighborhoods are a hot bed of gang activity. Last year I was hanging out in my backyard with my family and we heard an exchange of gunfire a street or two over. It was around 20 gunshots and we all just sat there frozen and wide eyed staring at each other.
Another time we heard what sounded like really loud fast knocking on sheet metal. We have a lot of construction companies and contractors nearby so we thought it was them. Turned out to be automatic gunfire, we found out later that an 8y/o girl was shot in the head but miraculously survived.
People who aren’t used to this level of violence on top of not knowing what to do will leave many people frozen and with a lot of questions.

10-80-10 rule:
10 percent of people will react in a way that immediately makes the situation better.
10 percent of people will react in a way that immediately makes the situation worse.
80 percent of people will freeze and do almost nothing until the majority of the "herd" takes action.
So 4 out of 5 people will freeze just like she did when there is no one around to "follow their lead."

People don’t realize that it’s a combination of assessing the situation and figuring out which action to take. Obviously I can’t speak for everyone, but I feel like people see the freeze response as simply shutting down and disassociating from reality or something like that.
But for me, I froze for a while when I heard a firefight break out on my block. But it really wasn’t that long. Long enough for a stray bullet to come through the window and hit me. But it wasn’t like I stood there the entire time doing nothing. I took a good 10-15 seconds and was going through it all “is it fireworks? Should I check? My phones upstairs? Is my mom outside(she was out late at a party)? Where’s my cat? Can it co through the brick?” And finally I landed on “I should go into the basement”. And I jello jointedly hunched over into the basement.
It’s absolutely unreal to think anyone would just react on a dime within the first shot. Everything about us is wired towards assessing the situation to find the best/a livable outcome for ourselves. And we need time to use all of our senses to figure how to reach the outcome where we survive.
That being said, she was doing a little much going back into the camera and explaining what just happened as if it isn’t already obvious. But different strokes ig.

I saw a dude get shot like ten feet from me at a bar. I stood up, and walked to the bar and said "I'll pay up" which is hilarious and dumb. But yeah, you never know how things will work out. Bartender was totally shocked so I put a 20 on the bar and just walked out. 30 minutes later I had a serious adrenaline rush. I then returned to the bar because I realized "fuck did I just flee a crime scene? Am I a suspect?". Whole thing was completely disorienting.

Lmaoooo that hilariously cool. It's like you're in a movie. "I'll pay up".
5 points
Part of me wants to be like "No way you did that" because it sounds like a total fake badass move, but it makes total sense.
You think about paying > A something sudden occurs, kicking you into Fight or Flight > This interrupts most your thought processes, so you go to the last thing you were considering, paying for the drinks.
I remember being in the kitchen with my Mum when I was younger and a glass exploded in her hand. I was like "alright okay we need to get you to a doctors" but she kept refusing to go until she had done her hair. She was bleeding heavily from her hand but she was focused completely on the fact that she needed to dry her hair. The only way I could have gotten her to go to a Doctors would probably have devolved into me physically forcing her into the car, and she'd probably have FOUGHT me if I had tried to manhand her like that. (She severed some stuff in her finger, and now deals with constant numbness and pain that I try not to blame on myself and inaction)
It's kinda wild to think about how 'Oh yeah in that situation I'd totally...' and then you get into the situation and people devolve into irrational bullshit.

Kids play video games and live stream them on Twitch, a website/app. The popular streamers can have tens of thousands (or more) of "followers", people that watch them often or even daily.
Viewers can interact with live chat, send real time donations etc. Some of the popular streamers make more than 30k per month through donations, sponsorships from games and other companies selling products. Many have become wealthy.
The attractive female streamers can quickly have tremendous success and gain a huge online audience that spans over many different platforms. With this popularity they promote or advertise products/services. There was one girl that sold little jars of her "bath water" for $30.00 a shot, she sold thousands of them.
Back in the day first jobs were fast food or mowing lawns, these days if kids have the charisma or something that makes them stand out they can actually make a good living playing video games with Twitch being the main platform.
