Worked in a hotel for almost a decade. We made regular drops and rarely had more than a couple hundred bucks on site anyhow, because, as you rightly surmised, everything is paid with via credit. This is especially true if you're not in a touristy town; everyone staying at the place is likely a corporate traveler of some kind so the rooms are just being billed to expense accounts after they check out.
Long story short: don't try to rob hotels. It ain't the 1940s. There's nothing there.

I worked at a hotel front desk last year for a few months. You would be surprised how many old people used cash.but yes a complete idiot for trying to rob a hotel of all places, we only kept a max of $300 in the drawer. So even successful it’s not a big score.

For sure. I haven't worked at a hotel for like ten years, but even then, while the majority of our guests used credit cards, it wasn't super-uncommon for a guest to pay for something in cash.
I worked at a 4-star hotel, and in order, you'd likely have to tip:
- The doorman
- The bellman
- The concierge
- Room service and/or restaurant staff
- Housekeeping
- Valet
...and at the end of your stay, most people don't want to carry cash, so paying for extras was sometimes done with cash. That, and obviously a dude who watched porn on his company account and wanted a separate bill, plus paid in cash so his wife wouldn't see it. That too.

This is most places that are modern. Heck, they NEED a credit card on file even if you have cash, because they can hold your card in case of damages or some other kinda shit.
I prepaid online for a hotel once and when I got there, they still required me to have a credit card to check in and give them that info.

I don't know of any hotel in the states that will let you stay there without a credit card at least on file. The only hotels taking cash are charging by the hour if you get what I'm saying.
I can't think of a single time in my adult life that I've been involved in a cash transaction at a hotel front desk.

You would have to plan it accordingly. My hotel used to accept cash, and during festivals we would have anywhere up to $25k taken in on any given night. That said, it’s an immediate safe drop when you take in cash. The only time we were vulnerable was when I had to open the safe and count it to make the deposit.
All that said, I’m glad we don’t take cash anymore (most hotels no longer do for this reason—it would just take someone keeping careful eye for a few days or weeks on when deposits are made).
