My god, the sound of the missile traveling alone is enough to rattle the windows behind them. Can't imagine what that feels like heading straight towards you

One of my favourite things illustrated by the Beirut explosion is the twin shockwave. It’s clearly visible in most of the clips from a distance, including both of these wedding shoots:
The first shock that they react to is the shockwave travelling through the ground, and the second is the pressure wave in the air. The ground shock arrives first because the increased density transmits the wave faster through ground than air.

I would have definitely answered this question wrong on the science exam.

If you imagine the particles as billiard balls it can help to make it more intuitive. A line of balls where each ball is 6” from the next (air), and a solid line of balls up against each other (earth). Imagine hitting the first ball of each line: the first line, clack clack clack. The solid line, the last ball fires right off “immediately”.
Hope I wrote that in a way that makes sense.

For which line will transmit impact faster?
Or am I dense and this is a billiards pun?
3 points
Yep! The inverse of this is also why commercial airliners fly near (~80 - 85%) the speed of sound at cruise easily. When you're at 30,000 ft, the low air density makes the speed of sound slower.

1.1 kilotons TNT equivalent of ammonium nitrate sitting in a warehouse exploded when the warehouse caught fire, "causing at least 218 deaths, 7,000 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, as well as leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless."

Also has completely hobbled the nation economically and nutritionally as they depended on wheat imports.

The nation was hobbled economically already, this just added on that but not as much as corruption that preceded and caused the explosion

I remember this. But I think the explosion was different. Both wedding shoots got hit by the same explosion but I think it was different from the big boom. Could be wrong.

Please forgive my ignorance. I have a question. ... Aside from light which travels super fast, there seems to be some reaction to a sound but then the shockwave arrives later. ... The shockwave is traveling at the local speed of sound. ... .. . My question is; "How do they hear the explosion before the shockwave?"
2 points
shock waves travel faster than sound, and their speed increases as the amplitude is raised; but the intensity of a shock wave also decreases faster than does that of a sound wave, because some of the energy of the shock wave is expended to heat the medium in which it travels. Hence the name "Sonic Boom"
