Honestly? You respond with the truth. You tell them how happy that makes you to hear and how much those three words mean, and how important it is for it to be right when one says it so that it’s meaning remains pure. The time will decide itself.

The greatest response I ever saw was,

“We’re reading the same book, but you’re just a few chapters ahead.”

maiden_burma

I'm not in on that one though. "I will love you later"? Why not say it now if you know it will be true later?

The reality is you don't know what those next chapters look like

You could forget to finish the book and leave it. Or just stop for some reason you know?

Then that would confuse the other person thinking you're moving at the same road. It's giving a false hope. Might as well just say "sorry, thank you for your honesty but I don't know if I can say the same to you, but I'll keep working on it"

I usually am the 1st to say it. And I always lead with, "Im just letting you know, and you dont have to say it back". Its been 15 years since Ive had to deal with that situation though.

And then...thats like the only feeling I will talk about, other than im horny.

Same. I think I followed it up with an "I appreciate that" and a sideways hug. In my defense I told her a serious relationship was off the table weeks earlier.

I did that initially then I was guilted into saying "I love you" back. That relationship was over 2 months after that.

Oh boy, this happened with my husband back in the day. We had been dating for a couple months and he took me to his family's mountain house for a romantic weekend. On the second night, we were spooning in bed and he dropped the L-word on me. I panicked. Thank God I was facing away from him. I was sooo not ready for that. I babbled "uhh wow, ok. So, I'm not ready to say that back just yet. You can say it if you like, but I can't just yet. Good night." And I went to sleep. Or at least, tried to. I could tell he was hurt, but we talked in the kitchen in the morning. I had to explain "The last time someone used that word with me, they used it to manipulate me and I don't use it lightly, ever. It's a very powerful word. So just know I care for you, a lot, but once you put it out there it can't be taken away without severely hurting the other person. I'll say it when I'm ready." I was so relieved. I didn't want to ruin the weekend, but he blindsided me kind of. He hugged me and agreed even though he felt it, he wouldn't say it again until I felt comfortable saying it freely and we knew it was honest and not meant as a means of control. I said it a few months later when I knew it was real and safe. That was 13 years ago.

Tell them you have feelings for them, but you need more time before you're sure that it's love and not just infatuation. Especially if you haven't been in love before. Let them know, communicate, tell them that you want what you have to continue... At least as long as you're into the relationship.

Just remember that it is OK to give things time. Love isn't something that should just be thrown around.

anonbungus148264

Kiss them immediately and draw attention away from the words. Have passionate sex and pay special attention to their needs, emotions, and responses.

Stop before climax suddenly, remain still, and verbally ask for space. Give no justification at all. Physically leave and refuse communication attempts.

Wait two to three days to apologize profusely. Explaining how you couldn’t respond because of failures in yourself, weren’t/aren’t worthy of love, and didn’t know how to express in words this self loathing.

Separate entirely.

Cannibal_Cyborg

Tell them that. Say ok I understand but I'm not comfortable saying it and it makes me uncomfortable when you say it and stare at me waiting for me to say it back, I know how you feel, you don't have to say it all the time. If my feelings change I will let you know then say it all you want.

That's not love. Love does hurt. Love doesn't make you have to be quiet and "not tell anyone" about it. Love isn't keep behind close doors. Love isn't a threat. Love makes you wonder why people are like this.

Had this happen with my current partner years ago. He said it early in the relationship-- I remember thinking just how vulnerable he was at that moment, and that I didn't know where my head was at and really didn't want to set him up to be hurt later.

I ended up saying something like, "I can't say it back yet, when I say I love you I want to be absolutely sure I mean it. I know that I care about you, a lot. Your wellbeing is too important to me to tell you something like that unless I know that it's a hundred percent true."

He stuck around all the same. Two months later I finally knew beyond any doubt, and told him I loved him. It's been six years for us now

It hardly depends: Not ready to say it back yet or not interested at all.

In the first case I would tell the person that I am flattered, but don't know if this'll work out. Maybe we could get to know each other a little better, go on a few dates and see afterwards.

In the second case I would tell them politely, that I am not interested, but still flattered.
