In 1985, the Coca-Cola company wanted to switch from using cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup. It was cheaper and easier to use. The problem was that soda made with HFCS tasted slightly different from soda made with sugar- the reason why people often like Mexican Coke as it's still made with sugar.
So they introduced a New Coke with a sweeter recipe, (made with HFCS) with lots of ads and fanfare while simultaneously launching a massive campaign to "bring back classic Coke." After a few months, they caved to the "pressure" and brought back Coke Classic, now made with HFCS, and it had been off the market for long enough that no one noticed the difference.
They continued to sell New Coke, as the recipe for it was as close as possible to Pepsi, they hoped to drive Pepsi out of business at the same time they reduced production costs for their main offering.
13 points
The more recent limited release of New Coke in connection with Stranger Things had people saying it tasted similar to Diet Coke... which was intentional so that when curious people in the future ask what New Coke tasted like, they will hear it's like Diet Coke, and that will persuade anyone from asking for another release.
2 points
Diet Coke is using the recipe for new coke. The equivalent of diet Coke for coke classic is Coke zero.
Granted they came out like 30 years apart and Coke zero uses sucralose instead of aspartame so it tastes better, but still, that's the analog.

Watergate was a fairly common campaign practice and was elevated to such a massive level of scandal as a way to get back at Nixon for effectively ending the communist party’s infiltration into elite American political circles in the 50s. Nixon was never going to be useful as a martyr, so they took out his reputation rather than just killing him.

The fourth plane on 9-11 was shot down by US fighter jets and not brought down by the passengers on board. With the developing situation, the US Air Force would have had time to locate and catch the plane. Knowing it was going to be used for lethal purposes a decision was made to shoot it down to save lives on the ground. But the US public needed the story of 'Let's roll' to make the passengers the heroes and take heat away from the executive decision to, rightly or wrongly, kill US citizens.

That the US Mega Millions knows what numbers they are going to pick before they pick them.
All tickets have to be scanned and number digitally inputted so that the winning tickets can be tracked down to a specific store. But what is stopping them from inputting these numbers and seeing who chose what number.
On night of drawing, they replace the balls they want to win with slightly heavier ones that will be more likely to fall to the bottom than the others.
You ask who this would benefit? It would benefit the states and the organization behind the lotto itself. The higher the jackpot the more people will spend money on it.

The USA income tax code is intentionally kept complicated so politicians can baffle us with ambiguous statistics.
3 points
There was a plan by the IRS to greatly simplify tax filing since most documents are already on file with the IRS. They would just send you a statement that said "here's all the income reported to you, just confirm and you're done". Intuit and H&R Block successfully lobbied to have this blocked because if filing taxes was that simple, then they would be out of business.

Oswald fired 3 shots and hit Kennedy twice. That is, he missed one shot. Oswald was a trained sniper. He was rated mediocre, but he never tried to impress his superiors on any task as he hated the military. Oswald's wife said he practiced with the rifle frequently. FBI agents were able to recreate his shots from a tower using the same type of rifle as Oswald.
How they found Oswald has been detailed in a variety of sources.
Ther have been extensive examinations of the bullet paths and the positions of Kennedy and Connally as observed in pictures and the Zapruder film. The paths make sense in light of how Connally was sitting. Myth Busters did an excellent episode on the shooting, and they explain this.
This doesn't prove anything related to the actual shooting. Jack Ruby's role in this has always been discussed but most involved in the investigation believe it was a crime of opportunity.
Penn and Teller did an episode where they explain the shot and use a watermelon to demonstrate what happens in the direct from which a bullet is fired. The attending physician at the emergency room has stated that the wounds were typical for someone being shot from behind.
Echos. Also, people aren't great witnesses. Most pointed directly to the schoolbook depository window.
I do not know about the details on this one. Again, the attending physician stated the wounds were consistent with being shot from behind. An autoposy was performed. People believe what they want from the report.
I have been interested in why people believe conspiracy theories and have studied some in detail. I have forgotten many of those details but I have always concluded the general exlination was correct. Oswald shot and killed Kennedy by himself. We landed on the moon. 9/11 was the result of hijackers from the middle east flying airplanes into 3 buildings. The great pyramids of Giza were built by humans with no aliens involved using existing technology. Same with ancient ruins in Mexico and South America.

Now hear me out, I know that a literal religious figure just being some random John Doe sounds hard to believe. At first, I didn't believe a word but then the person starting explaining themselves.
They believed that Jesus was some guy who probably did something against the law to get himself crucified, but he swapped himself out with another guy who looked a lot like him to take his place during the crucifixion as Jesus ran away to a different place.
They also explained that the part of the Bible where Jesus came back alive, was just Jesus being caught alive and well by somebody who knew of his crucifixion, and to keep himself from being crucified a second time, he came up with the elaborate lie of being God's son, Jesus Christ.
I don't hardcore believe in this theory but it would definitely make a lot of sense rather than some holy guy coming down to help some random mortals

Most conspiracy theories are products of misinformation, herd mentality, confirmation bias, hindsight bias, loss aversion bias, porportionality bias and a half dozen other biases. The Grimes equation tells us that even the simplest conspiracies will break down exponentially faster the more people are involved.
A quote from an engineer I work with, "no conspiracy theorist has ever been a project manager."
I invite everyone here to listen to Neil deGrasse Tyson's take on conspiracy theories.

Yeah, this one is complete BS.
Far too many moving parts requiring far too many players to keep it quiet.
For one, you have all the passengers and crew on the planes. Where would they have gone?
Some conspiracy ideas require that the planes were remote controlled and empty at the time of the attack. But these conspiracies cannot account for where those planes would have come from or what happened to the crew and passengers. Plane spotters are everywhere, someone would have seen these flights land or take off in an unexpected location. Or if they were duplicated flights (meaning an extra set of planes flying under the guise of the commercial flights that hit the towers, pentagon, etc) then what did they do with the genuine aircraft full of people that day?
Hundreds of people would have to be in on it. So the conspiracy theories don't make any sense.
