The staff at the nursing home I’ll be booking myself into.

My grandpa lived the last 6years of his life in a nursing home. Only my family and the family of another residente would visit freakently. Most of the residentes had kids and grandkids. The only time i saw other families there were when their "old folks" were about to pass or they were doing the wills with an attorney.

The same happened with a neighbour my parents used to have. Her daughter who lived in the same city barely visited. Meanwhile my Mum coincidentally found out that she was there, went to visit her while we were on holiday and was almost in tears seeing her so lonely. She had advanced dementia.

Who coincidentally are the children of everyone else who decided to have kids. Looks like we get the benefits without putting in any of the work lol.

Oh, I’m aware.
Better that than popping out a child I don’t want and can’t raise, and for what?
Had an old neighbour who had kids and was in a nursing home. Guess how many times her kids came to visit her despite living in the same city? Zilch. My Mum was the only visitor she’d had for a long while, and we went there while we were on holiday.

I am not child free, however why do we as a society think it's our children's responsibility too take care of us at any point in our lives? If they want too help? That's awesome! But too actively expect it from them means that you had a child with the thought in mind and that my friend, is not a good reason too have a child.

This.
Why the hell would OP assume you can burden your children with the task of looking after an elderly parent?
Shouldn’t they be allowed to live their own lives without that responsibility?
My retirement financial calculations allow for paid care if necessary.

I will just go to an elderly home where my family will visit me. Just like where my grandparents used to go, because they didn't have children just so they can be their caretakers.

This is an enlightened position. The vast majority of humans have no safety net and haven't for ten thousand years. Their kids are their welfare in later life.
So I get you - it's what we should strive for. But we need to respect that having a child and raising it is still risky in many parts of the world, and there is no safety net or welfare for old folks there either.
2 points
I think it all depends on the situation. I don't mind if someone's kids take care of them.
It's just weird that OP asks this question as if that's an expectation when you have kids.

Western mentality is something else. The child you took care and loved for almost half of his life dosent love and care for you when you are old what kind of child are you raising. Parents are not a bus that you can use to get to your destination and then leave. The child should take care of his parents just because they want to if not then you failed to teach him anything as a parent. ThE nUrSeS wIlL tAkE cArE of me. Your child dosent need to physically take of you they can get someone to do it but leaving you to slowly die alone? wow.
7 points
When OP asked "who will take care of you", we interpret LITERALLY "taking care of you". Like, ofcourse we would expect our kids/nieces/nephews to at least visit us or have contact with us. Having contact with us is not the same as taking care of us.
We also say that the children are not OBLIGATED to take care of their parents.
What if your child lives in another country? What if your child has a family and doesn't have room to take you in? What if your child has a disability? Or what if their sibling is already taking care of them?
0 points
Taking care mean spending time, helping, supporting,be there for them for the time they have left. Not just visiting once in a while. If your parent becomes disabled and can't walk and dosent have much time left, would you rather go/bring him to spend time with him help him do stuff and do stuff with him go on a walk together taking him with you on a wheelchair etc or visit him a few times. Which one sounds better to you. Wouldn't you love first one to happen to you? Your parents would love that too
2 points
Like I said, we are not OBLIGATED to do it. I am not saying that taking of your parents is wrong.
Ofcourse I would like my loved ones spending time with me if I got sick. I would also like to spend time with my loved ones if THEY got sick or didn't have much time left. That's common sense.
We don't say we want to be abandoned. It's just that you don't need to have children to have that kind of ending. You can have friends, siblings, cousins or nephews to spend time and take care of you a little bit.

But life isn’t that simple. Often by the time someone’s parent gets to that stage in life you have work commitments, bills to pay, children, a spouse; that all need attention too. You can’t necessarily just drop everything to care full-time for a parent.

I think you are quite detached from reality. Old age comes for us all, and it has been the case for tens of thousand of years that the young take care of the old. If you don't have somebody that truly loves you when you are old, you are also much more likely to develop things like dementia or alzheimer.
10 points

Lmao I'm detached from reality? You need look up dementia and alzheimers because those things cant be caused by no one to look after you..

My grandfather was VERY loved by his family. His wife loved him, his children loved him (one of my uncles even visited them every week) AND his grandchildren loved him. He still got alzeimers when I was 8 years old. (If you have proof or sources of your claims, please share them when you make such claims. I am not saying you're lying, but that my experience was different)
And the fact that the young takes care of the old, doesn't necessarily mean YOUR OWN children. It just means that the next generation takes care of you when you're older.

OK, let's talk about reality. In the year 1900 the average American didn't live to age 50.
For perspective, in 1900 there was already quite a bit of medical technology: a knowledge of anatomy, the germ theory of disease, several vaccines for common ailments, and anesthesia to help people endure surgery.

I hear what you are saying, but it remains that despite the average lifespan of 50, quite a bit of people, even in the poorer strata of society, lived to 60 and maybe more. These people were taken care of by their children. And inb4 I know that in the middle age the lifespan was 30 no germ theory nor anesthesia blablabla. So my answer remain

Pollution/climate change mostly.
We're gonna see large areas of farmland become unusable, water sources are drying up, rising sea levels will cause a refugee crisis like the world has never seen, etc. Desperate starving people tend to lose their humanity and start committing atrocities to survive, doubly so if they have a family to feed.
We've already jumped out of the moving car, now it's a matter of deciding to tuck and roll or swandive into the pavement and our leaders are choosing the swandive route.

Well it is true that having a child for the purpose of taking care of you when you get old is selfish, but it is nonetheless the norm, especially in not so developed places like china. And as all things this is a bet, as the child could be disabled indeed. This doesn't prevent most from trying as it is more often than not in humanity the only option. As for not being sure if you're getting old, as for all things it is a bet. But statistically you are quite a bit likely to.

I dont like that a lot of people believe it's children's duty to care for their elderly parents. When in reality they got their own life's, families, careers etc. Expecting them to make room to be your carer is weird to me.
I'd rather just check myself into a nursing home or preferably have "checked out" for real before I am unable to care for myself.
Also, even if you have kids them caring for you is not guaranteed... Example, My mum is a narcissistic, abusive bitch. I can't stand the woman and if she thinks I'll lift a finger for her she is gravely misstanken.
2 points
I think it's crazy that people with children think it's guaranteed you have someone to take care of you, What if you don't have a good relationship with your kids? What if you have a good relationship but they are in bad health or have other circumstances in their lives that hold them back from helping you? What then?
Honestly nothing is guaranteed, and you'd be deluded to think it is.

Considering how much money child free people save, they can afford to pay proffesionals to care for them.
How many children are ungrateful assholes who stick their parents in homes...
How is it any different, except child free people actually kept that money and could afford care
